The history of Post Oak High School

Post Oak Grammar school was founded by an African-American former Civil War Union soldier Henry Freeman. He was born in 1827 to a family of former slaves in New York. He enlisted in the Union Army in 1863 and courageously served with the 54th Massachusetts Regiment during the Civil War. After the war in 1865, he traveled aboard a ship with Major General Gordon Granger to Texas, where they announced the emancipation of slaves.

After his military service concluded, Freeman met a young German named Karl Lüderfelds (a former German noble whose family has the biggest shipping company in Hamburg) in Galveston. The two men forged a strong friendship and decided to move to Fredericksburg together, where they opened the Post Oak Grammar School for black children. Their collaboration transcended racial barriers and created an enduring legacy of education and empowerment for future generations within the African American community.

Today, the school continues to honor the Freeman & Lüderfeld family's original vision by providing a top-tier education that empowers students to excel in an ever-changing global landscape.
